Gameplay Programmer

We’re looking for a full-time Gameplay Programmer to work on Empire of Sin and other upcoming projects. Gameplay programmers are at the core of Romero Games, and are entrusted to make sure that they’re always doing what’s best for the game and for our players.

Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the design team to implement and iterate on gameplay features

  • Fix, maintain and extend existing systems and features

  • Write robust, maintainable code

Requirements

  • 2+ years game development experience

  • Strong knowledge of C# or C++

  • Experience working with a game engine such as Unity or Unreal Engine

  • Experience with game development tools such as source control, bug tracking, etc.

  • EU or UK residency and the ability to work onsite in our office in Galway, Ireland

  • A passion for developing great games!

Bonuses

While not required, the ideal candidate would have at least some of these:

  • Experience with game-related scripting languages such as Lua

  • UI programming experience

  • Shipped at least one PC/Console title


Build Engineer

We’re looking for a full-time Build Engineer to develop and own the build system at Romero Games. While the current Jenkins-based system has served to ship Empire of Sin, we are looking to overhaul and replace it with a new system that will grow to support multiple cross-engine game teams.

Responsibilities

  • Designing, developing and maintaining a new extensible build & CI/CD pipeline that can support multiple game teams using both Unity and Unreal Engine

  • Administration and maintenance of build server hardware and software

  • Perforce server administration - configuration, users, permissions, stream management etc.

  • Monitoring the build system for failures

  • Working with game teams to create, maintain and support build-related tools

Requirements

  • Experience of development with Continuous Integration system such as Jenkins, Buildbot, TeamCity etc.

  • Strong knowledge of programming & scripting languages used in build pipelines, eg. Python, C# etc.

  • Experience of source control systems, eg. Perforce

  • Strong opinions on what makes a great build system!

Bonuses

While not required, the ideal candidate would have at least some of these:

  • EU or UK residency and the ability to work onsite in our office in Galway, Ireland

  • Experience setting up and administering a Perforce server

  • Experience working with third-party APIs and interfaces such as those used by Amazon S3, Jira, etc.

  • GUI tool development experience

  • Shipped at least one PC/Console title

  • Experience working with Unity and/or Unreal Engine

  • Experience developing & running automated processes for consoles such as PS4 & XB1

Senior QA Tester

 We are looking for an experienced dev QA Tester to work across multiple platforms to ensure a high level of quality throughout the full development cycle, continuing into live operations. We are looking for a person that is invested in the quality of games, excellent at communicating issues, keeps an open mind, and is happy to think outside the box.

This position is located at Romero Games in Galway, Ireland.

Responsibilities

  • Day-to-day functionality testing to investigate, log, and report new issues

  • Regression testing alongside halo testing, highlighting potential knock-ons

  • Taking quality and functionality ownership of specific game areas

  • Regular smoke testing to ensure a smooth gameplay experience across builds

  • Working closely with the QA manager to identify new testing strategies

  • Daily participation in standup meetings, discussing tasks for the day

  • Raising quality concerns and providing constructive feedback

  • Collaborating with other QA members as well as Production, Art, Design, Code

Requirements

  • Experience within dev QA across all major platforms

  • Ability to stay flexible and prioritise your own workload to meet deadlines

  • Strong soft skills and happy to communicate & provide regular updates

  • Holistic approach to quality assurance, interested in testing from all angles

  • Familiarity with writing, updating, and running test plans

  • EU or UK residency and the ability to work onsite in our office in Galway, Ireland

Technical Artist

Romero Games Ltd is looking for a full-time Technical Artist to be the bridge between content creation and engineering.  We are looking for an Individual with an exceptional combination of technical and visual skills.  As an independent development studio, you can be part of a team where developers are able have a significant impact and contribute on multiple levels to the games we make. 

This position could be located in Hunt Valley, Maryland, USA or Galway, Ireland.

Responsibilities

  • Act as the bridge between the content creators and the engineers and facilitate communication

  • Support the art department with in-engine technical solutions and pipeline development

  • Research and develop tools to improve workflows and promote best practices for content creation

  • Ensure that development maintains industry standards and cutting-edge techniques

  • Work in close collaboration with the content team to create, maintain and optimize shaders for game assets

  • Work directly with the Art Director to help realize the technical aspects of the visual direction to ensure we reach our project goals

  • Provide feedback and communicate concerns regarding potential mismatch between artistic goals and technical reality

  • Be proactive and self-motivated in exploring new opportunities for visual effects throughout the game

  • Review content and the game for consistency, quality and performance

  • Help influence further development of technology and artistic processes within the studio

Requirements & Skills

  • Strong technical knowledge and an eye for aesthetics

  • Solid understanding for contemporary visual quality and fidelity

  • Deep familiarity of content creation pipelines, and common game engines

  • Experience with profiling performance issues

  • Advanced problem-solving techniques needed to resolve the numerous hurdles that present themselves throughout development

  • The ability to take seek out problems and to work with other disciplines until the problem is solved

  • Relevant programming or scripting experience in languages such as Python/C++/C#

  • Understanding of 3D math (linear algebra, vector and matrix maths)

  • Communication skills needed to give and receive constructive critiques

  • An awareness of industry trends and technology related to visual effects

  • 3- 5 years of experience and at least 1 shipped title

Bonus Skills

  • Experience with Houdini

VFX Artist


Romero Games Ltd is looking for a full-time VFX ARTIST.  Our growing team is looking an Individual with exceptional talent and passion for creating stunning visual effects.  As an independent development studio, you can be part of a team where developers are able have a significant impact and contribute on multiple levels to the games we make.  

This position could be located in Hunt Valley, Maryland, USA or Galway, Ireland.

Responsibilities

  • Create and implement visual effects that are aesthetically beautiful and efficient for performance in Unity and Unreal

  • Work directly with the art director to visualize effects that reflect the artistic direction of the game

  • Work with design to ensure the visual effects convey gameplay information

  • Collaborate with other artists and sound design to ensure that the visual effects compliment the other aspects of the game

  • Be proactive and self-motivated in exploring new opportunities for visual effects throughout the game

  • Help influence further development of technology and artistic processes within the studio

Requirements & Skills

  • Strong technical knowledge of contemporary shader features and artistic abilities needed for making stunning visual effects

  • Excellent visual understanding of form, timing, color, and composition and how those skills apply to visual effects

  • Experience making optimized effects that work with standard engines and hardware

  • Advanced problem-solving techniques needed to resolve the numerous hurdles that present themselves throughout development

  • The ability to take seek out problems and to work with other disciplines until the problem is solved

  • Communication skills needed to give and receive constructive critiques

  • An awareness of industry trends and technology related to visual effects 

  • Image manipulation software i.e., photoshop/substance designer

  • 3- 5 years of experience and at least 1 shipped title

Bonus Skills
